Mangrove Restoration Project in the Western Sundarbans, India

We at Previa, in collaboration with Pramenya Foundation, are working on an ambitious mangrove restoration project in the Western Sundarbans, located in West Bengal, India. This initiative aims to restore a vital environmental resource, protecting the coastal ecosystem and supporting local communities severely impacted by deforestation.

Why is Restoring Mangroves in the Sundarbans Important?

Mangroves are one of the most effective natural barriers against climate change and natural disasters. Unfortunately, over the last century, the Sundarbans have lost much of their mangrove forests, causing:

- Increased tropical cyclones and storm surges.

- Accelerated coastal erosion.>

- Saltwater intrusion into agricultural land, compromising farming.

- Decline in marine biodiversity, putting unique species and the local economy at risk

Our Goals for the Mangrove Restoration Project

Environmental Impact

- Plant 200,000 mangrove trees over 10 hectares of land.

- Create a natural buffer zone against cyclones, floods, and rising sea levels.

- Absorb 500 tons of CO2 per year, helping reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

Social Impact

- Engage local communities, focusing on women, in managing mangrove nurseries.

- Promote education through educational programs and awareness activities.

- Create economic opportunities to improve the well-being of local communities.

Benefits of Mangrove Restoration

Mangroves act as a vital natural shield against cyclones and storms, significantly reducing damage to coastlines and protecting local communities. Restoring these ecosystems also helps conserve biodiversity, providing ideal habitats for many marine and terrestrial species while improving the overall balance of the ecosystem. Thanks to their ability to absorb large amounts of carbon, mangroves play a key role in slowing global warming and mitigating the effects of climate change. Finally, our project promotes economic sustainability, creating jobs and supporting the self-sufficiency of local communities.

Follow Us to Monitor the Project:

We are using advanced tracking tools to monitor the environmental impact of the project. You can view in real-time the amount of CO2 absorbed by the mangroves we are planting in the Sundarbans.
